Following the success of Jedi: Fallen Order, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will continue the story of Cal Kestis. The game is set five years after the events of the original as Cal remains a major target for the Empire. Trailers have also shown off some new weapons and abilities that Cal will be using for the sequel, including rideable mounts and a crossguard lightsaber, but many are still waiting to find out more about the mysterious character he meets throughout the promotional material.

While there are only two trailers as of this writing, the most recent one from The Game Awards 2022 shows more of this mysterious “bacta tank character.” The trailer starts with footage of what looks to be Cal helping to free this character. He’s shown to have only one arm and says, “The order is gone. I was betrayed by the one I trusted the most. I will not be imprisoned again.” The gilded Jedi robes he’s seen wearing later offer possibly the best clue about his identity. Their regal design with golden embellishment is different from the brown and beige-colored robes seen in the movies, likely being from a different Star Wars era: The High Republic.

The High Republic is a period set about 200 years before The Phantom Menace when Jedi and the Republic at a peak - a golden age of peace. The High Republic storyline has only been officially around for less than five years, starting as books, but has quickly expanded into video games. Notably, Star Wars: Eclipse will be set during The High Republic era.

More evidence supports the “High Republic theory,” for example the crossguard lightsaber Cal is seen using. The crossguard has a similar design to Stellan Gios’s lightsaber, being another character from The High Republic. In official art designs, Stellan’s lightsaber has a design where the metal hilt goes under the actual lightsaber blade itself, so perhaps Cal got this idea from the “bacta tank character” who lived around the time that crossguards like this would have been more popular.

If this theory is true, questions about how this character survived for so long and whether there are more like him out there will have to be addressed. Also, this could imply that characters from past timelines - such as from The Old Republic - could make an appearance in future material. Finally, this could thematically be the “survivor” that the game’s subtitle is referring to - not Cal, but this mysterious “bacta tank character.” For now, fans will just have to wait and see what Respawn has in store with its anticipated sequel.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor releases on March 17, 2023, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
