The Universal and DreamWorks action-comedy directed by Pierre Perifel centers around an intelligent group of deceitful animals that attempt to become good. The incredible cast for The Bad Guys includes the voices of notable figures such as Sam Rockwell, Craig Robinson, Zazie Beetz, Lilly Singh, Marc Maron, Awkwafina, and Anthony Ramos. The animated film has already accumulated $63 million overseas, bringing its worldwide total to a satisfactory $87 million.

The animated film opened on Friday, generating $8 million to close out the night. Saturday ushered in a slight increase for the film, which earned $9.3 million. Sunday, however, was the lowest-performing day for the film, which ended the day with an accumulated total of $6.6 million. Nevertheless, a $24 million overall opening weekend performance was good enough to outpace Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which placed second for another box office weekend.
The reception for the animated film has been positive across the board, which undoubtedly played an integral role in the box office success seen over the weekend. The Bad Guys earned an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics while earning a 93% rating from the audience. CinemaScore gave the animated film an A grade, further highlighting the solid likeability of the Universal/DreamWorks project. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 ended the weekend in second with a $15.2 million accumulated total. Families are beginning to make their return to theaters after a notable absence due to the coronavirus pandemic. Family films have led the box office the past three weekends, emphasizing their importance and worth.
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore ended its second weekend in theaters in third, dropping two spots over a week from where it once stood. The Warner Bros. film ended its opening weekend atop the domestic box office with a $43 million performance but could only generate $14 million by the end of its second weekend. The dismal number is the worst second-weekend dip for any Fantastic Beasts film, highlighting the franchise’s work before them to recapture the magic for audiences. Robert Eggers’ highly anticipated project The Northman ended the weekend in fourth with $12 million, followed by Nicolas Cage’s The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, which generated $7.1 million to round out its premiere.
Studios can’t ignore the evident trends at the domestic box office, and it’s clear that family-centric films are making a solid impression. The Northman and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent fill a void for those not among the family-centric demographic, but their attendance fails to match the numbers present in the films accumulating the most revenue. It’ll be interesting to see where things stand once the Doctor Strange sequel arrives, but one can assume families will turn out in even more significant numbers.
The Bad Guys is currently playing in theaters.
