RELATED: Single-Player Games With Underrated Multiplayer Modes
These days, most of the big new multi-platform games support crossplay; effectively allowing people to game with their friends regardless of which system they’re playing on. Better still, developers have added this functionality to quite a few older titles as well. As a result, those looking for high-quality multiplayer games to enjoy with their friends really are spoiled for choice.
Aliens: Fireteam Elite
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One & PC
It’s always nice when a game that didn’t launch with crossplay support gets it in a future update. For those who are keeping score, that’s exactly what happened with Cold Iron Studios’ Aliens: Fireteam Elite, with the functionality being added into the game almost a full year on from its official release. Granted, this may be a case of too little too late for some, but those still having fun with the game will no doubt see it as a case of better late than never.
One suspects that there are plenty of people who fall into the latter category, as there’s still an awful lot of fun to be had with Aliens: Fireteam Elite. Sure, players may come for the Xenomorphs, but they’ll stay for the out-of-this-world gun fights and the wonderful job that the game does of creating tension and suspense when the battlefield falls silent. Of course, that’s not to say that the game doesn’t have its issues, but for fans of the series and high-quality third-person shooters, they should be fairly easy to overlook.
Among Us
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, PC & Mobile Devices
Although its popularity may have dropped off quite a bit since the beginning of 2021, Among Us remains one of the most popular multiplayer games on Steam. With new maps arriving on a somewhat regular basis and streamers continuing to support the title, that doesn’t seem likely to change anytime soon.
Following the game’s release on next-gen consoles, Among Us now supports crossplay functionality across all major platforms, including next-gen consoles. What’s more, for those wondering, the VR version of the game also supports crossplay, with players on Steam, Rift, and Meta Quest all able to play together.
Apex Legends
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS4, Xbox One, Switch & PC
Respawn’s battle royale took the overcrowded sub-genre by storm in 2019, delivering a polished experience that also added an element of strategy through its team-based gameplay. Since then, the game has barely lost a shred of popularity with more than 100,000 concurrent players on Steam. That is just a drop in the ocean compared to the game’s total user base, however.
Apex Legends supports crossplay, and EA’s site goes into detail on how to set everything up. Apex Legends also supports cross-progression across Steam and Origin accounts, but that’s as far as this feature goes. This means that if someone is playing on the Xbox One, for example, their progress will not carry over to the Nintendo Switch.
Battlefield 2042
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, Xbox Series X|S & PC | PS4 & Xbox One
There’s still quite a bit of work to be done to bring Battlefield 2042 up to the high standards set by some of the series’ previous installments, but the game is already far more playable than it was at launch and continues to improve with each new patch and update. Sadly, however, crossplay support is a little disappointing due to the way that it has been implemented by DICE.
While next-gen and PC versions of the game support up to 128 players at a time, those playing on PS4 or Xbox One face maximum lobby sizes of 64. Though some may actually prefer the less hectic experience that a smaller lobby brings with it, this does mean that there are two different crossplay groups. Anyone playing on the older consoles can be paired together, while PS5, Xbox Series, and PC players are all in a separate crossplay pool.
Brawlhalla
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC & Mobile Devices
Those searching for a more lighthearted fighting game with crossplay support need look no further than Blue Mammoth Games’ co-op fighter, Brawlhalla. Despite what its art style might suggest though, it’s still packing a surprising amount of depth under the hood, which is part of the reason why more than 50 million people have played the game since its release in late 2017.
There’s plenty of variety on offer when it comes to character selection too, with classic Ubisoft character Rayman even available as a guest fighter. Like Fortnite before it, the game features a battle pass system and there are plenty of crossover skins available in Brawlhalla too, including Lara Croft, Shovel Knight, and Ryu from Street Fighter.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One & PC
Love them or loathe them, most now view the Call of Duty games as being the best that the FPS genre has to offer. Surprisingly, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 actually falls a little short when it comes to the single-player experience, but the game’s multiplayer mode is every bit as enjoyable as fans have come to expect from the long-running franchise.
This is made all the better by the fact that the game once again boasts full crossplay support. Granted, this is now pretty much a given for a modern Call of Duty title, yet, with so many other big-budget franchises like FIFA making a mess of their crossplay support, this is something that definitely should not be taken for granted.
Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One & PC
While the annual Call of Duty titles also support cross-platform play, Warzone 2.0 just about has the beating of them thanks to its larger player base and its better selection of weapons. In fact, the latter actually incorporates many of the weapons from Vanguard as well as a few additional elements from earlier Call of Duty games.
Crossplay works across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox systems, and playing with friends on other platforms is as simple as signing up for an Activision account and sharing the ID. When it comes to realistic FPS titles with crossplay support, there really aren’t too many better options out there.
Chivalry 2
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One & PC
Almost a full decade on from the release of Chivalry: Medieval Warfare on Windows, Chivalry 2 was released on current and last-gen consoles in June of 2021. Like its predecessor, it’s a hack-and-slash action game with a heavy emphasis placed on multiplayer gameplay.
The game looks fantastic and combat has never felt more fluid, with improvements found right across the board. Those hoping to play it on PC may be a little disappointed to learn that it’s an Epic exclusive, but for those who don’t care or will be playing the game on console, it really is a great multiplayer title with an awful lot to offer.
Dauntless
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch & PC
First released in 2019, the hype surrounding Dauntless has died down quite a bit in the last year or so, but that’s not to say that it isn’t still a thoroughly enjoyable game. It’s an action RPG set in a fantasy world and supports both solo and co-op gameplay. Most would agree, however, that the latter is a lot more fun.
It’s a little like a cross between Borderlands and Monster Hunter, with players given access to a huge arsenal of weapons and then sent out to slay ferocious beasts. Some may not like its cartoony art style, but those who are able to look past it will find an excellent co-op adventure that’s definitely worth playing.
Dead By Daylight
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch & PC
Asymmetrical multiplayer games continue to grow in popularity at an impressive rate, with Dead By Daylight doing more than its fair share of the heavy lifting. Despite its age, the game continues to receive regular updates and even has next-gen patches for both PS5 and Xbox series consoles.
RELATED: The Best Asymmetrical Multiplayer Games
As well as the two new machines, players can play with friends who are on PC, PS4, Xbox One, or Switch; making it one of the most accessible games on the market. It’s not the most family-friendly of games out there, mind, but those looking for a solid horror game to play with their friends could definitely do a lot worse.
Deathloop
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, Xbox Series X|S & PC
Despite having started life as a PlayStation 5-exclusive, Deathloop was later ported to the Xbox Series consoles as well as being added to the Xbox Game Pass in September of 2022. To mark the occasion, the game’s developers rolled out the Goldenloop update, which, among other things, brought full crossplay support to the title.
Arkane’s innovative FPS title was one of the most highly-rated games of 2021 and still remains popular to this day. Though it doesn’t feature multiplayer gameplay in the traditional sense, the game does allow players to invade the gameplay sessions of others as Julianna, which is a great way to keep others on their toes.
Destiny 2
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One & PC
When it comes to live service games, they don’t come much better than Destiny 2. Since releasing in late 2017, Bungie has provided players with exemplary support, not just in the form of regular expansions and updates, but also when it comes to bug fixes and glitches too. It’s the perfect example of how a live service game should work and likely a big part of what led to Sony acquiring Bungie in early 2022.
Despite the game now being more than five years old, the developer still has plans for the future, with the Lightfall and The Final Shape expansions expected in the coming year or two. This forward-thinking approach has resulted in excellent player retention, ensuring that there are always plenty of people around to play with. The fact that the game also supports crossplay makes finding a good party all the easier.
Elden Ring
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5 & PS4 and Xbox Series X|S & Xbox One
The multiplayer elements found throughout Elden Ring are fairly limited when compared to a lot of other modern games, but that’s not to say that they’re not still important. Being able to summon a friendly Phantom to help deal with a particularly difficult boss fight can be an absolute godsend, as too can some of the messages left by other players.
Unfortunately, however, Elden Ring only has very basic Crossplay support. PlayStation owners can team up with others regardless of whether they’re on the fourth or the fifth iteration of the console line. Likewise, Series S and X players can play with a friend on an Xbox One and vice-versa. This is far from ideal, but it’s an awful lot better than nothing.
Escape Academy
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One & PC
It’s rare to come across a puzzle game designed for more than one player and even more so to find one with full crossplay support. Coin Crew Games offers exactly that with Escape Academy though, which allows two players to work together to solve a series of increasingly challenging escape rooms that are inspired by different school subjects.
There are 11 different escape rooms in total, with each serving up its own unique flavor of challenge. Some are a little easier to solve than others, but they all adhere to their themes pretty well and combine to create one of the most underrated video games of 2022. It’s a memorable one too, particularly when played with a friend.
EVE: Valkyrie
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, PSVR, Steam, Oculus & Vive
CCP Games has done an excellent job supporting EVE: Valkyrie, which is still going strong more than five years on from its original release. The game still has plenty of active users and remains one of the best first-person spaceship shooters on the market. What’s more, it features excellent crossplay support as well.
Though the latest version of the game can still be enjoyed without a headset, the VR experience remains its biggest selling point. The Warzone expansion also adds a lot of additional content to the game and is an absolute must for those thinking of checking out EVE: Valkyrie. The good news is that it’s priced pretty reasonably these days and often finds itself on sale as well.
Evil Dead: The Game
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One & PC
Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead series is one that should need no introduction to seasoned horror fans. In fact, even those who’ve never watched any of the movies will likely recognize its iconic main protagonist Ash Williams, who is played by Bruce Campbell. It’s a character that Campbell has portrayed on countless occasions now, and he once again reprises the role for Evil Dead: The Game.
Fans of asymmetrical multiplayer games may well be surprised with just how much care and attention has gone into crafting this one. The developers clearly have a lot of love and respect for the franchise and this results in an experience that will both terrify and delight fans of both the franchise and the genre itself. Better still, they’ll be able to experience the title with friends on other platforms, with full crossplay support available right from the get-go.
Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch & PC
Fall Guys took the world by storm when it was first released, thanks in large to its simple premise and cutesy graphics. Of course, it also helped that it was released during a pandemic and was given away for free to PSN subscribers. As with similar games, the hype did eventually die down a little, though it was quickly cranked right back up to 11 when the game went free to play and was made available on other platforms like the Switch and Xbox.
Admittedly, the lobbies aren’t always as full as they once were, but, thanks to the game’s seamless use of bots and its comprehensive crossplay support, players will never have to wait too long to get into a match. The game itself remains just as fun as ever and manages to provide a challenge despite its simplicity. It’s a game that rewards skill, and one that will likely continue to receive support for years to come.
FIFA 23
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, Xbox Series X|S & PC and PS4 & Xbox One
Given the huge popularity of the franchise, it’s a little surprising that it took so long for EA to add crossplay to its FIFA series. As the old saying goes though, it’s much better late (and, in this case, partial) than never, with players now finally able to play with their friends on other platforms after years of pleading with the developer to implement the functionality.
Crossplay will work across multiple game modes, though, sadly, not for those playing on consoles from different generations, nor for anybody playing the much-maligned Legacy Edition version of the game on Switch. FIFA Ultimate Team fans can rejoice, however, as the game mode will now feature a single marketplace for all PlayStation and Xbox players regardless of generation.
Final Fantasy 14
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4 & PC
Final Fantasy 14 is one of the most popular MMORPGs out there and that’s unlikely to be changing anytime soon. In a 2021 interview with The Washington Post, the game’s director and producer Naoki Yoshida said that he expects the title to continue receiving new content for at least another five years. With that in mind, the recently released Endwalker expansion seems unlikely to be the last.
Providing they’re all on the same server, players are able to team up with their friends regardless of whether they’re on PC or PlayStation. Rumors of an Xbox port of the game have been floating around for quite some time as well, although while Square Enix hasn’t ruled out the possibility, it seems unlikely that one will be arriving in the near future.
Fortnite
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, PC & Mobile Devices
Epic’s battle royale behemoth continues to reign supreme when it comes to the best multiplayer shooters; with more than 350 million registered users worldwide. It’s a game that’s oriented a little more towards fun than it is realism and its regular events and crossovers ensure that it never gets old.
Players will need to have an Epic account linked to their platform of choice and manually add their friends to their Epic friends list if they want to enjoy crossplay. By doing so, they’ll be able to play alongside people on any of the major consoles as well as those who are playing Fortnite on PC or mobile devices.
Forza Horizon 5
Platforms That Support Crossplay: Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One & PC
Forza Horizon 5 might just be the best-looking racing game ever made. It backs this up with a ridiculously large selection of vehicles and a realistic and enjoyable control scheme. Given the history of the series and its many successes over the years, however, most will have expected nothing less ahead of its release.
Like many other Microsoft-published games these days, Forza Horizon 5 features crossplay support for those playing on Xbox One, Xbox Series, and PC. The game is also available on Game Pass, meaning that subscribers can enjoy racing both with and against their friends for no additional cost.
Genshin Impact
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, PC & Mobile Devices
Following its release in late 2020, Genshin Impact took the world by storm. It generated almost $400 million dollars in its first two months alone and has nearly doubled that amount in the time since. While the single-player experience is certainly enjoyable, this is a game that has also been designed with multiplayer in mind.
Before players can begin to enjoy the game’s co-op mode though, they’ll first need to reach Adventurer level 16. Upon doing so, they’ll be able to team up with up to three of their friends on other platforms; providing, that is, that they’re all playing in the same region.
Guilty Gear Strive
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4 & PC
Guilty Gear Strive is one of the best fighting games of the 21st century and a must-play for any true fan of the genre. It features a well-rounded roster that can accommodate just about any play style and rewards those who take the time to understand and master its many quirks.
Though not everyone will appreciate the game’s art style, fans of anime and those who grew up playing classic 2D Street Fighter games should feel right at home here. Online play is solid and responsive too, making this a good shout for those who enjoy competitive fighting games.
GWENT: The Witcher Card Game
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS4, Xbox One, PC & Mobile Devices
Card-based mini-games have been around for quite some time, with Final Fantasy VIII helping to popularize the practice through the excellent Triple Triad. Gwent is a bit more complex than that, with this extra depth helping to make the game considerably more enjoyable for those who are willing to put in the time and effort required to learn how it all works and build the decks needed to succeed.
The game proved to be so popular with players that CD Projekt Red released a standalone version of it in late 2018. The turn-based title features a few major differences from the version found in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt though; the most notable of which is the inclusion of a multiplayer mode. Naturally, this led to crossplay functionality being added to the game, with PC players able to square off with their counterparts on Xbox, PlayStation, and mobile devices.
Halo Infinite
Platforms That Support Crossplay: Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One & PC
Six years on from the release of Halo 5: Guardians, Masterchief finally returned in late 2021 with the incredibly impressive Halo Infinite. The single-player campaign is fantastic, but the real star of the show is arguably the game’s multiplayer mode. Given the franchise’s history though, this probably shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to those who’ve ever played a Halo game before.
RELATED: The Best Free-To-Play Games On The Xbox Series X|S & Xbox One
With 22 weapons, plenty of great maps, and some of the best combat in the series’ history, Infinite was definitely worth the wait. Crossplay works across all available platforms too, though some console players are actually hoping that an option to disable the functionality will at some point be added due to their belief that PC players have an unfair advantage.
Halo: The Master Chief Collection
Platforms That Support Crossplay: Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One & PC
Those who find themselves struggling to get into the latest Halo game may instead be better served by returning to some of the series’ earlier entries. Halo: The Master Chief Collection provides many of them all in the same place and does a pretty good job of polishing them up to bring them reasonably close to modern-day standards.
Better still, it’s available for free to Game Pass subscribers and supports crossplay across Xbox consoles and PC, which will likely make the prospect of playing it a no-brainer to some. The collection features definitive versions of the first four mainline Halo games as well as the hugely popular Halo: Reach, which serves as a sequel to the series’ first installment.
Just Dance 2023
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, Xbox Series X|S & Nintendo Switch
Though there are plenty of excellent dance games out there, few series can compete with Just Dance in the modern age. As well as offering up some of the hottest tracks around to its players, the series’ most recent installment also happens to be one of the best multiplayer dance games of all time.
As well as supporting local co-op (which is particularly excellent on Switch), Just Dance 2023 also features crossplay, meaning that players can team up or compete remotely with their friends on other platforms. Crossplay works across all of the systems on which the game can be played, ensuring that nobody is left out.
Minecraft
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, PC & Mobile Devices
One of the biggest reasons for Minecraft’s sustained success is how readily available the game is. It’s been ported to 16 different platforms over the years and currently supports full crossplay for eight of them when playing the Bedrock edition.
Not only does the game allow players to join their friends who are playing on current and last-gen consoles or PC, but it also supports crossplay with iOS and Android devices. This bodes well, really, considering just how important social interaction and creativity are to the game’s overall appeal.
MLB The Show 22
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One & Switch
Having once been a PlayStation exclusive series, MLB The Show 22 can now be enjoyed on both Xbox and the Nintendo Switch as well as Sony machines. Just to add a little bit more salt into Sony’s wounds, the game, much like its predecessor, was available on Game Pass at launch; further strengthening the service’s position at the top of the pile.
The 2022 edition looks fantastic, especially on PS5 and Xbox Series machines, and also offers a lot more content than any of its recent predecessors. Some may have expected a little more from it due to the leap in hardware, but, when it comes to baseball video games, no series can match The Show for authenticity.
Mortal Kombat 11
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S & Xbox One
With the Street Fighter series taking something of a step backward in recent years and the complete absence of a new Virtua Fighter title, Mortal Kombat has now become the game of choice for most fighting game fans. Its success is as much down to its own merits as the failings of its competitors though, with Mortal Kombat 11 taking the series to new heights with its highly refined gameplay and well-polished visuals.
Crossplay (or Krossplay, as the devs have dubbed it) puts players on all PlayStation and Xbox consoles into the same matchmaking pool for casual online game modes. Those hoping to play with friends on other systems can do so as well, although they’ll first need to coordinate with each other outside of the game to find each other in one of the many Krossplay lobbies.
MultiVersus
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One & PC
When rumors of a new tournament fighter that would allow players to pit Shaggy from Scooby-Doo against Rick and Morty and other Warner Bros. characters, fans of the genre were very excited to say the least. Whether or not MultiVersus fully lived up to the hype remains to be seen, but most would agree that it’s a solid game either way.
The fact that it’s free-to-play gives it an edge over the Smash Bros. franchise, even if the fighting isn’t quite as good. Of course, given that the game is receiving regular updates, that too could change at some point in the future. As of late August 2022, more than 20 million people have downloaded the game, making it one of the year’s most popular titles.
Need for Speed Unbound
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, Xbox Series X|S & PC
Like many of gaming’s long-running franchises, the Need for Speed series has at times lost its way a little over the years. Thankfully, however, after the much-maligned 2015 reboot, the franchise now seems to be back on track, with Need for Speed Unbound building upon the solid if unspectacular groundwork laid by Need for Speed Heat.
Being the series’ 25th installment, it should perhaps come as little surprise to find a fairly well-polished engine under the game’s hood and one that can drive players toward a lot of fun. Crossplay makes the experience even more enjoyable, with players able to race against those on other systems to ensure that they’re never waiting too long to get behind the wheel.
No Man’s Sky
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One & PC
Following a calamitous launch back in 2016, the team over at Hello Games has really turned things around for No Man’s Sky. A plethora of new features and functionality has been added to the game over the past five years; the most notable of which is a much-requested multiplayer mode.
Providing they have their friends’ player codes, it’s possible for players to join those on PC, PlayStation, or Xbox machines. Much like some of the other big cross-platform games, No Man’s Sky also received a next-gen patch that improves performance and increases the maximum lobby size for those playing on console.
Overcooked: All you can Eat
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch & PC
Widely regarded as one of the best couch co-op games of the modern era, Overcooked: All you can Eat can also be played online with friends. It really doesn’t matter which system everybody’s playing the game on either, thanks to the title’s exemplary crossplay support. Seriously, is there nothing that the team over at Ghost Town Games can’t get right?
On every single system from PC to Switch, players will be able to join sessions with their friends regardless of what they’re playing on. There’s an awful lot of content on offer too, with most players able to get at least 20 hours of enjoyment out of the game before they’ve had their fill. It really is a tasty experience and one that deserves to be checked out at least once.
Overwatch 2
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch & PC
Although crossplay wasn’t available from the very beginning, Blizzard rolled out the feature for the first Overwatch game in June of 2021. Naturally, this crossplay support then rolled over into the game’s 2022 sequel, with Overwatch 2 boasting full crossplay support right from the get-go.
As a franchise, Overwatch has managed to remain popular despite Blizzard’s active user base having declined in recent years. The multiplayer game features accessible yet challenging gameplay and an identifiable roster of heroes; many of whom have taken on lives of their own outside of the series’ matches.
Paladins
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch & PC
Paladins is another free-to-play online shooter that can be played on all four of the major gaming platforms. It’s not quite as polished as some of the other great FPS games that are on the market, but its sci-fi and fantasy elements do at least help it to stand out, with many of its peers instead favoring a gritty and realistic approach to combat.
Though there is a fairly decent amount of variety on offer in Paladins, all four of its main game modes involve two teams of five, making it less than ideal for those who don’t enjoy being paired up with strangers. Thankfully, crossplay is supported across all available systems, making it much easier for players to party up to form a team of five that they can trust.
Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One & PC
Those looking for a great MMO to play with their friends in 2021 could do a lot worse than Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis. The game serves as a follow-up of sorts to Phantasy Star Online 2, which has now been live in Japan for almost a decade. It’s free to play and features a large and dedicated fanbase that makes its massive world feel truly alive.
RELATED: The Multiplayer Games That Defined Each Sega Console
Though at its core New Genesis offers an equally excellent multiplayer experience, some of the huge changes arguably give it the edge over its predecessor. Anybody who’s played PSO2 can easily bring their character over to the new game and the lack of a subscription or setup fee means players can check the game out without having to part with their hard-earned cash.
Pokemon Unite
Platforms That Support Crossplay: Switch & Mobile Devices
Though some of the genre’s veterans might see it as a bit of “my first MOBA” kind of title, that’s not at all to say that Pokemon Unite is a bad game. Far from it, in fact, with plenty of people still playing the Tencent-developed title more than six months on from its initial release on the Nintendo Switch.
Crossplay works across all systems, with players able to share lobbies regardless of whether they’re playing the game on mobile or Switch. The developers are constantly adding new Pokemon to play with as well, although this is somewhat tarnished by the game’s fairly aggressive monetization.
Rainbow Six Siege
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One & PC
Despite now being more than seven years old, Rainbow Six Siege still has an active and dedicated player base. The game continues to get a lot of support from Ubisoft too, with the developer finally adding both cross-platform and cross-generation support in a December 2022 update, much to the delight of the community.
With the year seven season four update, Rainbow Six Siege now boasts full crossplay support, meaning that every player will be able to play together regardless of which console they’re on. Given that the game has well over 70 million registered users, this should help it to survive for quite a bit longer, as too will the planned year 8 content.
River City Girls 2
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Switch & PC
The beat ’em up genre has seen something of a resurgence in recent years, thanks in large to games like River City Girls 2. The Kunio-kun spin-off serves as a love letter to a bygone era in which players could just kick back with their friends while simultaneously beating the life out of a bunch of 2D bad guys.
Being able to play with a friend makes a huge difference and will likely bring back fond memories of nineties arcades for those old enough to remember them. Couch co-op is definitely the best way to experience this game, but for those unable to do so, playing with a friend online via crossplay is the next best thing.
Rocket League
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch & PC
Despite having been released almost six years ago now, Rocket League still has a fairly sizable player base and continues to receive updates on a regular basis. Better still, the game is now completely free to play and is available on just about every major platform under the sun.
Although it’s possible to disable crossplay in one of the options menus, it’s enabled by default on all editions of the game. There are no restrictions on matchmaking either, meaning that players are just as likely to be paired with those on other systems as they are people playing on the same platform as them.
Rogue Company
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch & PC
Given how crowded the free-to-play hero shooter market is these days, it’s perhaps not all that surprising that Rogue Company had a bit of trouble finding its footing early on. However, with the game now officially out of Beta and available on all major platforms, it’s slowly but surely becoming popular thanks to its regular updates and the wide variety of playable rogues that are on offer.
At the time of writing, Rogue Company has 25 different playable characters, with many more expected in the coming months and years. This, together with its fast-paced gameplay and unique take on the genre makes it well worth checking out, particularly for those who are looking for a great crossplay game that they can enjoy with their friends.
Sea of Thieves
Platforms That Support Crossplay: Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One & PC
Sea of Thieves has improved a lot since its original release back in 2018. The size and scope of the game have grown dramatically and many of the niggling issues that blighted the game at launch have long since been patched away. What’s left is one of the very best action-adventure games that money can buy and one which offers a truly fantastic multiplayer experience.
The game was released for Xbox Series consoles in late 2020 but has been available for Game Pass subscribers since 2018. With a special Pirates of the Caribbean crossover marking the launch of season 3, there’s arguably never been a better time to set sail across Sea of Thieves’ open world; either solo or with friends on PC or Xbox.
SMITE
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS4, Xbox One, Switch & PC
The life-consuming MOBA allows players from all of its platforms to come together, even managing to convince the PS4 to jump on board. Like a number of games with this feature, SMITE presents players with the option to toggle crossplay on or off; alternatively, they can set it to only allow console players to take part.
Playing with a mouse and keyboard on a PC provides some advantages over the console versions, so users should take into consideration whether it is worth opening the gates completely. On Steam, SMITE still averages roughly 10,000 concurrent players per month, so PC users should not struggle to find opponents. While exact numbers are not available for console users, SMITE does rank among the Xbox’s most played games, although nowhere near the top.
Splitgate
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One & PC
The concept behind Splitgate is so simple that it’s a little surprising that it took so long for somebody to think of it. On the surface, it’s a fairly standard first-person shooter, but the ability to create wormholes akin to the ones found in Valve’s hugely influential physics-based puzzle game, Portal, really helps to set the free-to-play multiplayer title apart from its many peers.
Not only can Splitgate players use these wormholes to quickly traverse the map, but they can also shoot through them in order to pick off enemies. This, in turn, makes the experience feel far more strategic than a typical FPS game, with players really needing to think about how best to use portals in order to gain the upper hand. With over five million people owning the game on Steam alone, matchmaking typically makes for a fairly speedy process, particularly as Splitgate supports crossplay across all of the platforms on which it’s available.
Street Fighter V
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4 & PC
To say that Street Fighter fans were a little unhappy with the state of Street Fighter V at launch would perhaps be a bit of an understatement. The game felt as though it had been rushed out of the door long before it was ready, with the complete lack of an arcade mode being one of the more noticeable issues.
In the six years that have followed, however, Capcom has completely transformed the game, not only adding in the previously omitted arcade mode but also fixing just about every single other complaint that players brought to their attention. With Street Fighter 6 just around the corner, the game doesn’t have much time left in the spotlight, but, while it’s there, players should definitely make the most of it.
Streets of Rage 4
Platforms That Support Crossplay: Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One & PC
The Microsoft link between Xbox and PC can also be advantageous to non-Microsft games as well, as evidenced by Streets of Rage 4. The twenty-six-years-in-the-making sequel also supports Crossplay between the three different platforms, arguably giving these versions the edge over their PlayStation counterpart.
Of course, PS4 and PS5 players can still enjoy the fantastic Beat ’em Up together, but they won’t be able to play with those on PC or Xbox. This is a real shame, as Streets of Rage 4 is a game that’s best enjoyed with friends, though there is thankfully a local co-op mode available as well. In fact, local co-op allows for up to four players rather than just two and so is arguably the best way to play when possible.
Super Animal Royale
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch & PC
Given how oversaturated the market is these days, the battle royale genre is probably the most difficult one to break into. Super Animal Royale, which is completely free-to-play on all of the platforms on which it’s available, succeeds, however, in this regard, thanks to its simple yet charming visuals and solid gameplay loop.
The game allows up to 64 players in a single match, providing a wide variety of characters and weapons for players to choose from. The size of the player base has fallen a little since its mid-2021 release, but, thanks to its fantastic crossplay support, it’s still relatively easy to get into a game in 2022.
Temtem
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch & PC
When it comes to creature-collecting games like Pokemon, they don’t get much better than Temtem. It’s basically PokeMMO, just without the threat of the game being taken down by Nintendo or Game Freak with little more than a moment’s notice. Then again, to suggest that Temtem is just another Pokemon clone would perhaps be doing both it and the game’s developers a bit of a disservice.
The art style in Temtem is a little reminiscent of the one used in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, which really helps to bring its wonderfully designed cast of creatures to life. It also takes a slightly more mature approach to storytelling than the Pokemon series, which may well appeal to fans who have been with the long-running Nintendo franchise for a few generations now.
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One & PC
Despite being a spin-off game, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is actually ahead of the main Borderlands series in a number of key areas. For one thing, the game’s class and skills systems are far more intuitive than the ones found in the main series and do a much better job of allowing players to tailor their characters to better match their own individual playstyles. The writing and humor also feel a lot less forced, particularly when compared to Borderlands 3.
Another area where Wonderlands comes out on top is in the crossplay department, with the game offering full crossplay support at launch. In Borderlands 3’s defense, Gearbox Software did recently announce that the game’s crossplay support would soon extend to PlayStation consoles, though many will argue that this news comes two years too late. Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands arguably has a lot more to offer at this point in time, and, with more DLC still to come, that doesn’t look like changing anytime soon.
Valheim
Platforms That Support Crossplay: Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One & PC
Valheim is one of the more ambitious survival sandbox games out there, not to mention one of the most successful. It managed to sell more than five million copies in its first month on Steam; an impressive feat indeed considering it was still an Early Access title at the time and was thus lacking many basic features and functions.
It’s come a long way since then, and in September of 2022, the game’s developers rolled out a patch that added full crossplay support. This not only allowed players who had purchased the game through different PC storefronts to play together but also laid the groundwork for the upcoming Xbox One and Xbox Series ports of the title, both of which are expected at some point in 2023.
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodhunt
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5 & PC
The Vampire: The Masquerade series has enjoyed a massive boost in popularity over the past few years, with more and more people getting into the tabletop RPG. This, in turn, has led to an increased demand for video game adaptations, and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodhunt is one of several recently released titles that are seeking to quench the players’ thirst.
Those looking for a single-player experience would be better served with Swansong, but anyone after a solid multiplayer title set deep within the World of Darkness universe would be foolish to pass on Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodhunt. Sharkmob’s battle royale sets players loose on the streets of Prague and allows them to work either on their own or in factions to partake in visceral and fast-paced fights. Better still, it’s completely free to play and allows players to team up with friends on other platforms by default.
Warframe
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch & PC
There’s a lot of competition when it comes to free-to-play multiplayer third-person shooters, so the fact that Warframe is still going strong almost a full decade on from its initial release is a testament to the game’s quality. It’s one of the very best that the genre has to offer, attracting around 50 million registered users since making its debut in early 2013.
Interestingly, Warframe didn’t launch with cross-play support. Far from it, in fact. It wasn’t until early 2022 that crossplay was added to the game; nine years on from the its initial release. Despite the game’s age though, Digital Extremes continue to push out updates on a fairly regular basis, with plenty more planned for the future.
WRC Generations
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One & PC
The World Rally Championship series has been quietly making up ground on the racing genre’s heavy hitters for quite some time now. Though it’s probably not quite ready to overtake at this point, the likes of Dirt and Gran Turismo will likely be staring anxiously into their rear-view mirrors, as WRC Generations is now mere meters away from catching up in terms of quality.
The game is absolutely stunning at times and features some of the most realistic driving mechanics around. There’s a wide selection of both current and legendary cars for players to drive too and plenty of great game modes to keep them entertained for hours on end. Like its predecessor, the game also supports cross-play. Though not every mode can make the most of the functionality, it tends to be the ones geared around local multiplayer that don’t, so this shouldn’t be too much of an issue for most players.
WWE 2K22
Platforms That Support Crossplay: PS5 & PS4 and Xbox Series X|S & Xbox One
After the absolute dumpster fire that was WWE 2K20, expectations were pretty low for WWE 2K22. It would seem that taking a year out to get its stuff together really did the franchise the world of good though, with its most recent installment much improved and arguably the best that fans have seen since the mid-2010s.
Though true crossplay support would have been nice, the ability to play with friends on older consoles is still very much appreciated given the ongoing supply shortages for next-gen systems. Better still, community creations are available across all platforms, ensuring that players can share their custom superstars with whomever they like.
