RELATED: The Best Charm Combos In Hollow Knight
The list below will feature some of the little things that even veteran players might have missed, ranging from unique boss interactions, NPC dialogs, interesting map design, and many others.
10 Knight Can Fall Asleep On The Bench
Being a Souls-like title, Hollow Knight has its own version of the famous bonfire from Dark Souls in a form of a humble yet comforting bench. It’s a checkpoint system that works similarly to any other Souls-like title, naturally benches are scattered across the map thus representing the Souls archetype even further.
However, if players remain idle for too long, there is an animation where players’ character nods their head downwards, and it looks like they are taking a quick nap.
9 Mantis Lords Room Hidden Area
Another aspect of the game similar to Dark Souls is gaining access to the hidden parts of the area by hitting the appropriate wall.

If the player returns to the Mantis Lords’ boss room after attaining the Monarch Wings, it is possible to jump to the top left side of the screen, break the wall and end up in a small cave where the player can uncover a Lifeblood Cocoon, that, when struck, gives extra HP.
8 Unique Dream Nail Dialogues
An interesting aspect of the dream nail is the ability to read the thoughts of the NPCs that players might strike. However, striking most enemies gives players a boring dialog with one or two words at most, so most people will just use it for its other more important functions such as collecting dream essence and entering the dream realm to fight different versions of some bosses.
Interestingly enough, some enemies break this stereotype and have a different dialogue when struck, Moss Knight at the lake of Unn and Watchers butler at a Watches Sire are some examples.
7 Dung Defender Boss Fight Trick
One of Dung Defender’s signature moves is burrowing himself into the ground and moving around freely. He can also un-borrow at the player’s location in order to do damage. This move becomes especially dangerous when he is under 50% HP and starts using it rapidly; he indicates this by letting out a battle cry just like the one at the beginning of a fight.
RELATED: Hollow Knight: How To Defeat The Dung Defender
A helpful trick to counter this move is using the Desolate Dive ability. If done correctly, Dung Defender should re-surface on impact. The timing is not too strict, so it’s worth a try, especially because it stuns Dung Defender after and allows the player to get some good damage.
6 Unique Interactions If The Player Is Wearing Defenders Crest
Another interesting detail surrounding the Dung Defender is the crest players get after defeating him. If a player equips Defenders Crest and tries to interact with merchant Lemm, he will say that he doesn’t want Knights stench on his relics and simply close the dialog option.
Luckily the game has many more merchants and not all of them hate this charm, quite the opposite in fact. Merchants like Leg Eater and Tuk give players some advantages when wearing this charm. Leg Eater grants players a 20% discount on his items and repairs while Tuk gives a free Rancid Egg.
5 Players Can Find Tisos Body After Visiting Colosseum
When visiting Kingdoms Edge, players can quickly notice all the falling corpses from slain enemies coming from above, or more precisely, from the Colosseum of Fools.
However, it is also possible to find the body of Tiso, an arrogant, challenge-seeking adventurer. The game never explains his death, but the most obvious answer is that he met the ultimate fate at the Colosseum, just like all the other falling enemies in the area.
4 Enemy Made Of Gold In City Of Tears
When arriving at the east side of the City of Tears, it is easily noticeable that its architecture looks more luxurious and unique compared to its western counterpart. That’s because the City of Tears is split into two sides, with the eastern side being the richer one.
But even further than that, players can find a secret room with a unique golden enemy that drops 400+ geo when killed (which is the most of any standard enemy in the game). This enemy does not respawn which makes sense considering the amount of geo he drops would make for an overpowered farming method.
3 Millibelle The Banker Is A Fraud
Many players probably encountered Millibelle at the bottom of the fog cannon and happily used her geo-banking services. But if the player decides to give her a certain amount of geo (around 2500), she will disappear from her usual spot and leave behind a 2D cutout of her stand.
Thankfully players hard earned geo is not lost forever, and Millibelle can be found at the Hot Spring in City of tears. After finding her player can literally beat the stolen geo out of her and even get a 1.5 multiplier bonus.
2 Menderbug Spawn At Forgotten Crossroads
This encounter is extremely rare, with only a 2% chance of appearing. Menderbugs’ only job is fixing the broken signs that the player breaks and isn’t a threat or dangerous in any way.
RELATED: Unresolved Mysteries In Hollow Knight
Although challenging, it is possible to kill Menderbug by casting the Desolate Dive ability as the player is falling from Dirthmount to Forggoten Crossrounds. An alternative and more complicated way to do this is to pause the game when falling, unpause, and quickly hit him with the nail.
1 Menderbugs House
If the player does decide to kill the Menderbug, there is even more content surrounding this rare encounter, namely the fact that players can find Menderbugs house at the same place where shopkeeper Sly can be found the first time player meets him.
Inside his house is a Menderbugs diary that players can read to learn more about this mysterious bug’s thoughts and way of life.
Hollow Knight is available on PC, Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4, and Xbox One.
