However, as mentioned before, video games can be pricey and this is no exception on the Switch. Many of the best games are first-party exclusives such as Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which despite launching in the system’s first year, are still sold at full price. For those looking to spare their wallets and not break bank accounts, there are a few solid options on the Nintendo Switch that can be played for free. While it is important to note that many of these titles do include microtransactions, they are not mandatory to purchase in order to enjoy the game on the most basic level.

Fortnite

One of the most popular multiplayer games around needs no introduction, as Fortnite has taken the world by storm thanks to its addictive battle royale premise and plethora of popular IPs duking it out in one mega-crossover event. While many goodies in the game like cosmetics and weapons can be purchased, general progression and other unlockables can be acquired by simply playing the game. Thankfully, the chaotic action in this sprawling sandbox is fun, and as an added bonus, doesn’t require paying the extra fee for Nintendo Switch Online in order to play with others.

Warframe

Warframe can at first seem like an overwhelming experience to get into, with numerous stats, menus, and mechanics to get a grip of. However, for players that stick with it, there is a hugely rewarding multiplayer shooter to be enjoyed here. For the sake of comparison, Warframe is similar to Destiny but toss in a stronger emphasis on loot grinds like in the Borderlands franchise. If that’s not enough, the game is also graphically impressive for a Switch title, and it won’t cost players a dime.

Super Kirby Clash

For players that can’t wait for Kirby and The Forgotten Land to be available, this free-to-play Kirby romp should be a good holdover. Originally released on the 3DS and finding new life on the Switch, this surprisingly robust action RPG has a lot of content packed into it. The game can be a little too heavy on its emphasis for in-game purchases, but if gamers can ignore that, the combat is just flashy and fun enough to be a nice distraction.

Brawlhalla

Super Smash Bros Ultimate is without a doubt the premier fighting game on the Switch, but for players who’d like to try something different, Brawlhalla is a decent alternative. The simple yet flashy combat system, pitch-perfect platforming, and massive cast of characters result in a complete package for fighting fans. New content is added to the game on a fairly regular basis as well, making it a good option to have on the side in between playing other games.

Asphalt 9: Legends

The Nintendo Switch has no shortage of racing games, and Asphalt 9: Legends is a great addition to the library of anyone with a need for speed. The game boasts absolutely stunning graphics, solid racing controls, and a catchy soundtrack. The menu interface and often egregious amount of encouragement to pay for in-game cosmetics can be a bit much, but underneath all of that is a fun racing fling perfect for bite-sized chunks of gaming.
